The Old Westbury Police assisted the Suffolk County Police Department in the pursuit of a man suspected of robbery early Monday morning as the car chase carried into Nassau County and ultimately ended in Old Westbury where the suspect was arrested.
The police provided the report to the Old Westbury Board of Trustees at its meeting Monday night.
Police told the board that at 12:21 a.m. Monday, the Old Westbury Police Department was called to assist the Suffolk County Police Department in pursuit of a carjacking suspect.
The car in pursuit went off the roadway at the intersection of Guinea Woods Road and the Northern State Parkway exit ramp in Old Westbury, police said.
The suspect then fled the scene on foot, police said, with K-9 and aviation units responding to the search. Police said a perimeter was set and the search ensued.
The Old Westbury Police said they received two calls from residents who reported a man with no shirt on knocking on the doors of homes.
In response to those calls, the man was found and arrested on Bacon Road in Old Westbury, police said, and transferred to a hospital to treat minor injuries sustained in the car crash.
“Wonderful work,” Mayor Marina Chimerine said.
The Old Westbury Police Department is also looking to purchase drones to aid in their efforts, which Chimerine said would improve response times. The police said that it could also deter crime in the village.
“So they will be able to spot any criminals without having to do a full-on pursuit,” Chimerine said.
Chimerine said she has spoken with Police Chief Stuart Cameron and they are going forward with purchasing the drones for the village.
Police also told the board that they have boosted security in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The board also approved engineering fees amounting to $18,000 for the rehabilitation of the village’s elevated water tank.
Chimerine said this would be a major project as the tank has not been rehabilitated in about 30 years.
The mayor said she is uncertain about the time frame for the project, but that it will done during the fall and winter when water usage is lowest. She said the rehabilitation will also diminish cell service in the village as cell service equipment is stored on the towers.
The Old Westbury Board of Trustees will convene again on Nov. 20.
