Nassau County legislators approved $200,000 in additional bonding to repair the Sands Point Bridge and increased the overall capital authorization for the project to $2.4 million.

The bridge project includes rehabilitation along the bridge and its approaches, cleaning of the stone fascia arches and retaining walls, repointing the stone masonry and roadway rehabilitation and other various repairs.

A unanimous vote from members of the Public Works, Finance and Rules committees approved the projects funding on July 17. A press release from Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D–Glen Cove) said this capital plan will aid in necessary resources to repair the bridge.

“These long-awaited repairs to the Sands Point Bridge are crucial for giving our entire community the comfort of knowing that this historic structure will be safe and secure for motorists to drive on for many years to come,” DeRiggi-Whitton said in a press release. “I thank my colleagues for supporting this important investment in our community and look forward to its approval by the full Legislature in the coming weeks.”

While members of the County committees approved the capital project’s amendments to provide additional funding, the project awaits full approval from the Nassau County Legislature. This could be as soon as Aug. 7 when the body will hold its next full session.
