The Bristal All- Stars held the first annual Long Island Senior Softball Association Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. Four long time members of the league were inducted into the Hall of Fame.
While Major League Baseball deals with the shame and fallout of the tainted steroid era, the Bristal All- Stars honorees, who range in age from 74-86 and play two doubleheaders a week. They were lauded not only for their on-field play but for their outstanding community service.
Eighty-three-year old Pete Zaccaria of Point Lookout is the manager of the Cardinals. Zaccaria, who has been a member of the Point Lookout Volunteer Fire Department since 1952, also pitches. He was elected chief in 1961 and served two terms as Fire Commissioner. He is an EMT with the Point Lookout volunteer rescue company and donates his time to drive elderly neighbors to doctor appointments, shopping, houses of worship and to the airport
Eight-six-year old Ernie Catanese of Uniondale Is an outfielder with the Redsox. Since his retirement from the Grumman Corporation he and his wife have become active in community service in Uniondale. Due to his efforts Nassau County turned over land to Uniondale that it was going to sell. That land is now Martin Luther Memorial Park.
Seventy-four-year old Bill Capparelli of North Massapequa: Is the starting right fielder for the Cubs.
Bill is a retired member of the NYPD. He also served in the military and has been a volunteer at the Northport VA Hospital since 1993.
Seventy-five-year old Sal Frosina of Seaford is the starting second baseman for the Mets. Since his retirement from Citi-Bank he snow plows for “older” neighbors on his street and drives seniors in need of assistance to doctor appointments and medical treatments. Sal is an active volunteer at St. William the Abbot RC Church and utilizes his banking expertise at St. James Parrish.
