The Gold Coast Arts Center in Great Neck has been closed indefinitely after a water main break in the street below the building on Aug. 11.
Gold Coast Arts Center Executive Director Regina Gil said both the Arts Center and the Mediterranean restaurant Lola below them have been closed since the break was discovered.
Arts center Chairman Michael Glickman said town workers found the break after entering the basement to determine the cause of an unpleasant smell. The break’s exact location is still unknown.
“We are just hoping that this is going to get resolved as quickly as possible,” he said. “So that we can get these kids back into the art center and start the new school year off in the best possible way.”
Typically, a water main break results in reduced water pressure in adjacent homes and businesses. It can also cause water to rise out onto the street from below.
The foul odor coming from the sewage is too overpowering for people to go inside. However, art center employees were able to retrieve their notebooks and other equipment so they could continue working from home.
Glickman said the number of parties involved in fixing this is slowing down the process.
“This involves Nassau County, the Town of North Hempstead, the village of Great Neck Plaza, and the water authority. It involves the landlord who owns the first floor, including the movie theater space of that building,” he said. “So we’re on the second floor. It requires all of them to be in conversation, working together to figure out where that break is.”
There is no estimate for when this issue might be fixed.
But Glickman said that the center has secured space for the remaining two weeks of their current programming before school begins.
“We’re actually going to be in multiple places depending on the classes that are being offered, and how much space is needed,” Glickman said.
The Gold Coast Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit multi-arts center. Through education, exhibition, performance and outreach, it seeks to foster and advance the visual and performing arts.
The title of this article is irresponsible and inaccurate. The Gold Coast Arts Center is not indefinitely closed. It’s main space is temporarily closed as repairs to the water main break are addressed. All classes continue to be held in satellite locations.
