Glen Head man joins lottery’s ‘Millionaires Club’

Some people have all the luck.

Glen Head resident Steven Dobbies became one of three New Yorkers to win a $1 million payout from the multi-state Monopoly Millionaires Club early last month.

Dobbies, Norma Ramos of Manhattan and Victor Olaya of Rego Park, Queens, each claimed prizes from the Nov. 7 drawing, according to the New York Lottery.

Dobbies, a self-employed bookkeeper, bought two $10 quick pick tickets from the KG Cards Gift & Art Gallery at 33 Park Plaza in Glen Head and checked his numbers the next day.

They were a match.

“I asked the clerk for a printout of the winning numbers. I saw I wasn’t the Top Prize [of $25 million] winner but that my numbers matched the club prize,” he said. “I still wasn’t sure if I had won the million but I thought, maybe. Stuff like this doesn’t happen to me.”

Dobbies said he was “99.9 percent sure” he had a $1 million winning ticket.

When he went to the lottery’s Plainview office to claim a prize, his suspicions were confirmed.

“After that,” he said, “I just went numb.”

After required withholdings, Dobbies took home $661,800, the lottery said.

Dobbies said he has always wanted own his own house, and that the winnings might give him the opportunity to finally purchase one.
