A highway patrol officer sustained injuries to his neck and back after a 2012 Isuzu struck the back of his patrol car Tuesday while he was responding to an accident on the Long Island Expressway, police said.
The officer, who was not identified, was seated in his patrol car with emergency lights activated as he was investigating an eastbound vehicular accident on the Long Island Expressway near Exit 36.
The officer was brought to a hospital where he was treated and evaluated while the driver, a 63-year-old man, remained at the scene and was uninjured. The Isuzu went through a brake and safety check.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
