H. Frank Carey High School’s Class of 2022 graduated Saturday in a ceremony at Hofstra University where loved ones and friends gathered to honor the seniors.
A moment of silence was held for a student named Daniel Ruffini, who died in 2019 and would have been graduating from the Franklin Square school this year.
“He was a happy and friendly soul who sought to brighten others’ lives while exhibiting kindness and compassion,” Principal Christopher Fiore said. “I know he is here celebrating with us today, and we have his rightful place in our class marked with his graduation cap and gown.”
Valedictorian Devin Casano also mentioned his fellow classmate in his speech. “To me, he was Dan, Danny, and a best friend.”
“If his loss has taught us anything, it is this: No matter if you live 16 or 116 years, life is still painfully short, so live it…make every effort possible to see your dreams come into fruition,” Casano said.
The night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex also featured performances from the school’s chorus and orchestra and speeches from other students as well.
Salutatorian Emily Lavin mentioned in her speech that “despite frustrating setbacks and troubling hardships in recent times, I am thankful we persevere.”
Fiore told the graduates to “lead with your heart. Be the change you want to see in the world. Stand tall, be confident, and stretch your limits.”
