A New Hyde Park gas station is donating $0.01 for every gallon sold at a designated pump through the end of the year to support the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park.

Channi Singh, owner of the BP gas station on 77-40 Hewlett St. on the corner of Lakeville Road and Union Turnpike, said it’s the second fund-raising effort of its kind to support the organization.

“This is the best way to let people know that we are part of the community,” Singh said. “When first meeting them and seeing what they are doing, it really impressed me. It’s a great thing to do.”

Singh said he first put together the effort about five years ago, donating a penny for every gallon sold throughout the year at the Ronald McDonald House-branded pump, leading to an approximate $14,000 donation.

The Ronald McDonald House is the cornerstone program of RMHC New York Metro. Its mission is to “build a community of compassionate care by creating and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of sick children and their families,” the website states.

“Not every one that stops for gas knows about the house,” Singh said. “It’s been very nice to  be able to increase exposure and support for them.”

The success of both fund-raising efforts so far has led Singh to do the same at another one of his locations, the Exxon station in Flushing located at 178-02 Union Turnpike.

Proceeds from the Exxon station will go toward Queens Central Progress, which provides children and adults with developmental disabilities programs to maximize their skills development and independence.

“I want to increase this to as many locations as possible,” Singh said. “It’s the best way we found to support the community and promote great causes.”
