Funding from a county grant program is going toward The Village of Kings Point getting an additional six license plate reader cameras and six speed radar signs to help curb property crimes and dangerous driving in the village’s busiest areas.
Nassau County Legislator Mazi Melesa Pilip secured the funding for the new technology and the installation of the devices is set to start soon.
License plate reader cameras, or LPRs, are used by law enforcement to identify and track vehicles. Additionally, they allow for communication between neighboring departments which may be monitoring a suspicious vehicle or a fleeing suspect. Speed radar signs are placed on specific roadways as a visual reminder to motorists what their speed is and if necessary reduce it.
“The Village of Kings Point cannot thank Legislator Mazi Melesa Pilip enough for her hard work in securing the necessary funding to help our police department fortify our technology security infrastructure,” said Village of Kings Point Mayor Kris Torkan. “Time and time again, Legislator Pilip steps up for the Kings Point community and delivers necessary results to improve our residents’ quality of life.”
While property crimes across the country have been on the rise in recent years, the Village of Kings Point has seen a different trend. From 2022 to 2023, it saw a reduction in property crimes according to Police Commissioner Daniel Flanagan.
“The hardworking and brave individuals who make up the Kings Point Police Department have done extraordinary work to make Kings Point one of the safest communities on all of Long Island,” said Flanagan. “The addition of these LPR and speed radar devices will enhance our ability to deter criminals from targeting our community, track suspicious vehicles and cut down on unsafe driving on our roads.”
Pilip has served the 10th District of the Nassau County Legislature since last year.
“Technology is the key to strengthening safety and security in neighborhoods,” said Pilip. “The intelligence and information law enforcement is able to attain due to license plate readers and other law enforcement high tech tools is an effective component to fighting crime and capturing criminals. The partnership with the Village of Kings Point in this effort has resulted in not only promoting public safety, but sending a message to would-be criminals that you will be caught.”
