A stolen car from Great Neck with three New Jersey teenagers inside crashed into Nassau County Police Department patrol vehicles on Sunday, resulting in five officers being injured, officials announced on Tuesday.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder announced that some of the officers may have suffered career-ending injuries as a result of the accidents.
The three teenagers from Newark – two 16-year-olds and one 17-year-old – were arrested Sunday morning, according to Ryder.
Police received multiple reports of suspicious males attempting to break into vehicles throughout the North Shore of Nassau County, including Flower Hill, East Hills, Manhasset, Plandome and Greenvale.
Ryder said a Nassau detective noticed the stolen Mercedes in Roslyn and attempted to stop the car, but the driver of the Mercedes rammed into the detective’s car, according to officials.
Officials said the three teenagers fled in the Mercedes, which had a flat tire after hitting the detective’s car, before all three were taken into custody on the Long Island Expressway.
Ryder said one of the officers was treated at the hospital for a concussion along with injuries to his neck, hip, wrist and back. Another, he said, was treated for wrist damage and a third officer treated for neck and shoulder pain. One detective was also treated for a concussion and another was treated for a cervical strain, Ryder said.
Less than a month after Ryder spoke to residents throughout the Great Neck peninsula urging them to keep their vehicles locked as a result of increased car thefts, he again implored the public that police officers’ lives are being put at risk as a result of individuals not taking out their key fobs or simply leaving their cars unlocked.
“My cops are getting hurt trying to recover your property that if it was locked we wouldn’t be in this situation,” Ryder said. “I wouldn’t have five cops that are out sick with, maybe, career-ending injuries.”
Officials said they recovered a 9-mm pistol and 15 rounds of ammunition from the Mercedes. Two of the teenagers had previous arrests, with one of the 16-year-olds being charged with burglary and possession of stolen property in New Jersey and the 17-year-old being previously arrested for auto theft.
The teenagers were charged with five counts of second-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree attempted grand larceny, petit larceny, unlawful fleeing from a police officer, criminal mischief, and other traffic violations, officials said.
The 17-year-old and the other 16-year-old were arraigned on Monday and released, with the other 16-year-old being held on a vehicle theft warrant from New Jersey, according to Ryder.
“They are not little kids,” Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said. “They are dangerous.”
Ryder previously said a majority of stolen cars that have been recovered are located in Newark. He also said car thieves will drive the car around, leave it somewhere and if nobody comes near the car and it is not impounded, then the car will be rented to another individual who uses it to commit other crimes.
According to Ryder, 121 vehicles were stolen year-to-date throughout Nassau County in 2021. During the same time frame since the start of 2022, he said, that number has increased to 370, an increase of more than 200% from last year.
