A pair of local hospitals received high marks from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, according to a report published last week.
NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island in Mineola and Catholic Health’s St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center in Roslyn received five-star ratings, the highest possible ones, from the federal agency, according to the report. Less than 14% of the almost 3,100 hospitals rated by the agency received a five-star rating, officials said.
2022 marks the third consecutive year St. Francis received the agency’s highest rating. St. Francis President Charles L. Lucore said the distinction by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid service is reflective of the cumulative efforts from the hospital’s staff and caretakers.
“St. Francis Hospital is honored to once again be recognized for our commitment to providing high quality and safe patient care,” Lucore said in a statement. “This award directly reflects the hard work of our physicians, nurses, and all staff, as well as the excellence in care that they provide.”
Hospitals are rated based on a variety of rates including safety, morality, patient readmissions and patient surveys, officials said.
Four-star ratings were given to Northwell Health’s North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and Glen Cove Hospital. Northwell Health President and CEO Michael Dowling lauded the efforts of the entire team to receive the agency’s high honors.
“I see the amazing effort by Northwell Health team members every time I step inside one of our hospitals and those results are reflected in CMS’ latest ratings,” Dowling said in a statement. “Our hospitals scored extraordinarily well in mortality and safety of care, crucial metrics for any patient to consider when choosing where to get their health care. The mission is a good one — raising the health of the communities that we serve — and I’m proud of the work that we continually put in.”
Two weeks ago, local hospitals were also praised for their work by an annual U.S. News & World report. NYU Langone Health was ranked as the best health care system in the state and third-best throughout the country, according to the report.
North Shore University Hospital was ranked the fifth-best in the state, St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center was ranked as the state’s sixth-best facility, while Northwell’s Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park came in seventh in New York, according to the list.
The list used 20 benchmark procedures to grade 4,500 health care facilities and individual hospitals for their lists. The company also ranked hospitals in 15 areas of complex specialty care, taking into account the quality of patients’ experiences, how well they have fared after their treatments and adequate staffing.
St. Francis was ranked as “high performing” in 17 common adult procedures and conditions, including hip fracture, hip replacement, kidney failure, lung cancer surgery, knee replacement, back surgery, heart bypass surgery and others.
North Shore University Hospital was nationally ranked in the top 30 for pulmonology and lung surgery, cardiology/heart surgery, geriatrics, urology and orthopedics, according to the list. Last month, Northwell’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park was ranked by U.S. News & World as Long Island’s top-ranked children’s hospital.
