A completely redesigned version of the Great Neck Public Schools website went online Monday, about 20 years after it first went online on March 1, 1998.
The new website features a photo carousel in the heart of the page, a calendar of coming events, and links leading to the pages of administrators, programs and other facts about the Great Neck schools.
It also features an option to translate the page into Farsi, Mandarin, Korean, Spanish and a host of other languages, as well as a scroll-down menu to access the websites for the district’s 10 schools that share the same template as the main page.
“This site has been redesigned from the ground up,” Marc Epstein, the technology director for the Great Neck Public Schools, said on Monday. “It’s something that we wanted to have a lot of very modern features and a much more organized and consistent and uniform navigation for our schools and for our district.”
One feature is a “responsive design,” which allows the website to adjust according to different electronic devices and window sizes on desktops, and social media integration, Epstein said.
Factors considered in the redesign were aesthetics, simpler navigation, a clean look and consistency. School officials also previously said they wanted a site that would be responsive on digital devices and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Epstein said the district began working on the new design last May or June, having formed a committee of school and program representatives to identify what they hoped to have in the website.
In July, Epstein said the schools began working with Blackboard on design, before working to migrate content in November.
