Great Neck South High senior awarded college-sponsored Merit Scholarship

South High School senior Dana Li is the recipient of a National Merit Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Scholarship, which is awarded through the prestigious 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Dana is one of more than 2,900 distinguished high school seniors nationwide who were announced as college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship winners on June 5.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program finalists who plan to attend their institution.

These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. An additional group of Scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2024 competition to more than 3,600.

The National Merit Scholarship Program includes several rounds of evaluation. The first round recognizes high school seniors as Commended Students based on their outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT (PSAT)/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Less than 1% of the highest-scoring entrants in each state advance as Semifinalists in September and the finalist list is announced in February.

This year, the National Merit Scholarship Program recognized 44 Commended Students, 42 Semifinalists, and 40 Finalists from the Great Neck Public Schools.
