The Great Neck Estates Village Board Monday night approved an application from Dr. Laura Danoff to make interior renovations to a ground floor space in the co-op apartment building at 160 Middle Neck Road to use as an orthodontic office.
The proposed use is not a permitted use in that business district, but the village code allows it if the village board approves.
The board also approved the Architectural Review Board’s recommendation to allow changes to the signage at the Sam & Ko hair salon at 74 Middle Neck Road and the landscape plan at 13 Hillcrest Drive.
Mayor William Warner said a hearing will be held April 8 to discuss a developer’s proposal to demolish the Great Neck Prominade commercial building at 200 Middle Neck Road in order to construct condominiums.
Great Neck Estates Police Sgt. Shannon Noor reported that the village applied for a state grant of about $150,000 to install license plate readers at various spots in the village. They are used to spot cars reported stolen, expired and suspended registrations, and cars with unpaid fines.
He also said the village received a state grant to purchase an electric patrol car and that the department was evaluating various makes and models.
Warner said the village had received a proposed contract from the Great Neck Vigilant Fire Co. for fire and ambulance service for the year. A public hearing will be held at the next village board meeting March 11 to discuss the costs.
He also said the sanitation contract expires May 31 and the village will have to prepare a bid solicitation.
The board was told that the search for a new director of the waterfront Great Neck Estates Park has not borne fruit.
“It’s been a challenge,” said Park Commissioner Nicole Toch. She said the village was reaching out to nearby villages, school districts and private organizations for leads on possible candidates for the position. It was brought up that the search should be expanded by a wide posting on the village website, newspaper help-wanted ads and on job board websites, which she said would be done.
