Nearly $75,000 has been raised to aid a Manhasset-Lakeville firefighter who lost his home in a fire in late December.

On Dec. 30, a fire ripped through a three-story apartment building at 15 Clent Road in Great Neck. The fire, according to officials, sent three people to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and minor burns, and nine individuals were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Brian Levings and his wife Jill were able to escape the fire without having to be transported to the hospital, but their home, along with their two cats, were lost due to the damages from the flames.

Levings has served as the president of the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department, captain of the department’s Company 4 and currently serves as the assistant department treasurer.

In efforts to try and help Levings, a member of the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department for more than 50 years, current Company 4 Captain Anthony Dilluvio and 1st Lieutenant Christopher Kopel started a GoFundMe.

Dilluvio, in a phone interview with Blank Slate Media, said the company wanted to do anything in its power to help out a fellow member when they need it most.

“We’re very tight-knit here, basically just a big family, so when we see one of our own in need we do whatever it takes to make their situation better,” Dilluvio said.

Dilluvio said the fundraising exceeded their initial goal, touting the community’s support and extensive reach of the internet in garnering more than $74,000 to support Levings and his wife to bounce back from the fire.

“[Brian] is a Marine Corps veteran so we knew that he has a lot of people in his circle plus the GoFundMe goes so far across the country,” Dilluvio said. “We’re seeing people from Massachusetts and California popping up and donating.”

Other fire departments in the area, he said, have also been donating to help Levings obtain the necessities, even offering various furnishings in some cases.

“We just wanted him to settle in and take it easy,” Dilluvio said. “We just want to make sure he can get back into his apartment and back into a regular lifestyle.”

Dilluvio also touted Levings’ dedication to the department and public service, saying went back to work “pretty much that week” of the fire.
