Approximately 50 firefighters helped extinguish a third-floor apartment fire on South Middle Neck Road in Great Neck Saturday evening.
Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro told Blank Slate Media a 911 call was received at 4:15 p.m. reporting smoke coming from an apartment window on the third floor of 140 South Middle Neck Road.
The owners of the apartment were out of the country at the time of the fire, which was a result of spontaneous combustion due to contractors in the unit leaving sawdust shavings in a plastic garbage bag.
First responders from the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department were on the scene within minutes and contained the fire to just the apartment in approximately 20 minutes, Uttaro said.
The firefighters were joined by the Great Neck Alert Fire Department and the Great Neck Vigilant Fire Department remained on standby at Manhasset-Lakeville Company No. 2’s firehouse.
Firefighters went into the apartment and extinguished the fire with two handlines, Manhasset-Lakeville said. No injuries were reported at the location.
Manhasset-Lakeville was joined at the scene by the Great Neck Alert Fire Department. The Great Neck Vigilant Fire Department and New Hyde Park Fire Department remained on standby at Manhasset-Lakeville’s firehouses during the call.
