Jennifer DeSena, Town of North Hempstead Supervisor, and the Town Board announced Thursday that work has officially begun on the Michael J. Tully Park parking lot in New Hyde Park.

This project will see the leveling, complete repaving, and striping of the entire parking lot. Construction, which will be completed in multiple phases, is slated to finish in the first quarter of 2025. North Hempstead has contracted with Galvin Brothers & Madhue Contracting to complete the job.

“Tully Park is one of our town’s most popular places, but these parking lots have spoiled the experience for residents for far too long,” DeSena said in a press release. “It’s been 30 years of patchwork repairs that put Band-aids on it, but this work is a long-term solution that addresses the infrastructure.”

Tully Park has received a number of major upgrades in recent years, including five renovated tennis courts and 14 lighted pickleball courts. These courts, along with the new outdoor track and athletic fields, were built using a geogrid system that prevents settling and subsequent damage. The new parking lot will feature the same technology to avoid future reconstruction.

Currently, the firematics and student sections of the parking lot are under construction, with the rest of the lot to follow. Town officials noted that because construction is being done in phases, there will always be portions of the lot open and accessible to Tully Park patrons. Additionally, the project will not impact the usage of any other outdoor facilities at Tully Park.

“I’ve been around this town a long time, and one of the constants has been the love for this park,” Dennis Walsh, councilman of the Third District, said. “Everybody comes here, young and old, because it’s got something for everybody. It deserves attention and it’s finally getting it.”
