Town of North Hempstead opens cooling centers, extends public pool hours to combat heat wave

With temperature highs reaching the mid-90s this week and a heat advisory issued by the U.S. National Weather Service, the Town of North Hempstead has opened cooling centers and expanded public pool hours to aid community members in beating the heat.

The U.S. National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the North Shore from 11 a.m. Thursday until 8 p.m. Saturday.

Two cooling centers are open in the Town to combat the heat wave. They are located at the “Yes We Can” Community Center at 141 Garden St. in Westbury and at Clinton G. Martin Park Community Building at 1601 Marcus Ave. in New Hyde Park.

The cooling centers will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

The cooling centers provide air conditioning, cold water and comfortable seating. They are open to all residents to help them stay cool and avoid heat exhaustion, the Town stated in a press release.

The town’s four public pools will also provide extended hours Wednesday through Friday. This includes Manorhaven Beach Park Pool and Clinton G. Martin Park Pool open until 9 p.m., Whitney Pond Park Pool open until 8 p.m. and Martin “Bunky” Reid Park Pool open until 7 p.m.

The Town also offered methods to stay cool during the heat wave, including drinking water, wearing lightweight and lightly-colored clothing materials like cotton, wearing wide-brimmed hats outdoors, taking cool baths and showers 1-2 times a day and limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption.

Community members can get additional information about resources and methods to beat the heat by calling 311.
