New Hyde Park residents will be heading to the polls May 21 to vote in the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District election, which has a ballot featuring two incumbent Board of Education trustees and its $48.1 million budget.
New Hyde Park-Garden City Park BOE Trustees Danielle Fagan and Binu Jacob are running for re-election this May in a race without any challengers.
Both Fagan and Jacob were elected to the board in 2021 after running in an uncontested race. They both filled the seats left by former Trustees Jennifer DeRocchis and David Del Santo, who opted not to run again.
Now Fagan and Jacob will run again unchallenged to fill another round of three-year terms. This would be their second term.
The new term would begin on July 1 and continue until June 30, 2027.
Voters can select either of the two incumbents on the ballot or write in a candidate for the district’s Board of Education.
Efforts to solicit comment from Fagan and Jacob were unavailing.
Also featured on the ballot is the school district’s budget of $48,101,950 with a 2.88% tax increase, which falls within the district’s allowable tax levy cap.
Voters will also vote on the Sewanhaka School District’s budget of $255,707,308, which is increasing by 4.5% from the district’s current budget of $244,691,452.
The school district’s election will also be held at the Hillside Public Library. The ballot will include voting for two members to the library’s Board of Trustees and the library’s budget.
Featured candidates on the ballot are Peter Pinto seeking a three-year term to fulfill a vacancy on the library Board of Trustees and incumbent Maura Rossi for a five-year term.
Voters will also vote on the library’s budget of $3,330,865, which is a budget-to-budget increase of 1.76%. The total amount of taxes levied would stay the same under the budget, with greater use of the library’s fund reserves and state aid to underwrite the budget increase.
The election will be held from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on May 21 at Michael J. Tully Park, located at 1801 Evergreen Ave. in New Hyde Park.
