The Herricks Community Fund raises money throughout the year to support a variety of causes, programming and scholarships in the Herricks community.

The non-profit recently hosted the Herricks Carnival, which is its biggest fund-raiser of the year.

“We use those funds that we generate from the carnival to support our many activities,” Co-Vice President Gary Davis said.

The Herricks Community Fund supports a variety of local programming, including a year-round Senior Nutrition Program that operates Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. The non-profit also hosts entertainment outings and lunches for senior citizens. The Herricks Community Fund has a large focus on helping senior citizens stay active within their community.

The fund members are currently focused on Friday Night Recreation, Davis said. FNR is a program that invites middle-school students to enjoy a night of games, arts and crafts, DJs, pizza, soda and snacks for a $10 fee. The aim of the program is to provide local kids with a safe, drug-free after-school environment at Herricks Middle School.

During its run, the Herricks Community Fund has donated more than $1 million to community programs, including Our Space Adult Day Program, Herricks Youth Council, Scouts, Herricks Scholarship Fund, Herricks School District and more.

Davis encouraged those interested in volunteering to reach out: “We’re always looking for volunteers.” Interested individuals can email fund members at hcf@herricks.org or call at 516-742-1926.

The Herricks Community Fund originated in 1986 as a means of fund-raising for programming at the Community Center. In 1996, the Herricks superintendent and board members asked the fund members to expand their reach to include the school district.

Since then the Herricks Community Fund has been actively involved in Herricks student programming and supported many student scholarships.
