The Herricks Board of Education selected Juleigh Chin as its newest president, replacing Jim Gounaris who will now assume the vice president seat.
The appointments were unanimous with the full board applauding for Chin. Both were then sworn into their offices.
Gounaris was appointed as president in 2022 and will conclude after two years in the seat.
The Herricks School District also swore in one of its two new Board of Education trustees Monday morning.
Trustee Shaheda Quraishi took the oath to assume her position on the Board of Education. Trustee Maria Bono was not present at the meeting Monday morning.
“I’m just excited to be here,” Quraishi said.
Bono, a former teacher and active PTA member, defeated former Trustee Brian Hassan with 63% of the vote. Quraishi, a Northwell physician, defeated five challengers for seats on the Herricks BOE.
The oath of office was also renewed for Superintendent Tony Sinanis and the district clerk.
The Board of Education also opted to enter a class-action lawsuit against various social media companies, something multiple other Long Island school districts and others nationwide are joining.
Sinanis said the board opted to join as a plaintiff in the lawsuit after the law firm Frantz Law Group, APLC and Ingerman Smith, LLP, which is leading the lawsuit, reached out.
The board also held a public hearing for a pending district-wide safety plan. The district is assembling a team to draft the plan.
Revisions include a bus driver and bus monitors on the district safety teams, parents notified of lockdown drills and more detailed floor plans for the school building plans. Floor plans would not be included in the district-wide plan as it is a public document and the clerk said it could cause safety issues.
The plan will be adopted by Sept. 1 before the school year begins.
The plan is available to be viewed on the district’s website.
The board’s next meeting will be held on Aug. 8 at 6 p.m.
