Police officers arrested a Glen Cove man who allegedly starved his three-year-old female pitbull, who weighed just 36 pounds in March when she was surrendered, according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.

Gadal Letellier, 27, was arraigned Thursday before Judge Charles McQuair. The dog owner is charged with failure to provide proper sustenance, which is a misdemeanor.

“This defendant allegedly allowed his 3-year-old Pitbull to starve and deteriorate until she was severely emaciated,” Donnelly said in a statement. “Thankfully, ‘Scrappy,’ as she is now known, was surrendered and placed with a local animal rescue where she is receiving proper medical attention and can begin to recover and gain weight.”

At about 12 p.m. March 26 at a home on Mariners Way in Glen Cove, county detective investigators and a detective with an animal cruelty prevention society conducted a wellness check on a tan pitbull that had been observed in the front yard, Donnelly said.

Letellier showed the detectives two dogs, a gray-and-tan male pitbull named Ruger and a tan female pitbull named Yagami.

The defendant surrendered the tan female pitbull, telling detectives he was unable to support the dog and did not have dog food.

“Scrappy” was evaluated at Brookville Animal Hospital the day she was surrendered. The vet who examined the female dog said her body composition was 1.5 on a scale of 1 to 9. The dog was undernourished and dehydrated, the vet said.

The defendant was released without bail on a promise to appear in court as required. He is due back in court May 14.
