The Floral Park Board of Trustees voted to formally oppose the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s proposed termination of a bus servicing the Floral Park Long Island Rail Road station, saying it will cause a burden on residents and businesses.
“The resolution we approved tonight lays out in detail some of the concerns that we have, not only here in Floral Park but the whole concept of this,” Mayor Kevin Fitzgerald said.
The Metropolitan Transit Authority, also known as the MTA, is proposing a redesign of the Queens bus network, which would change the route for the Q110 bus. The new bus route would parallel the Long Island Rail Road track from Jamaica to the Floral Park Station.
The Q110 bus route would include service in Floral Park, which would require approval by the village and the state Department of Transpiration commissioner, according to the village.
Village officials said the route would create redundancy in the area, which is already serviced by the train and the Nassau Inter-County Express bus. They argued that this redundancy would not increase the service area.
The village also argued in the written resolution that the bus service would also cause traffic congestion and may impede emergency services.
Village officials said another route has been proposed by the MTA and is also being considered. This route would have the bus traveling northbound on South Tyson Avenue
to return to Jericho Turnpike.
The village said this would also cause traffic issues and could pose a danger to children at the John Lewis Childs Elementary School on Elizabeth Street.
Trustee Jennifer Stewart and Fitzgerald urged concerned residents to voice their opinions at the MTA’s public hearing on July 24 and by submitting comments to the organization.
The board of trustees also approved the special-use permit for the Japanese restaurant Torigo, located at 206 Jericho Turnpike. The restaurant serves authentic Japanese food and fresh sushi.
