New Yorkers will vote on Proposal 1, also known as the Equal Rights Amendment, which proposes expanding equal rights protections in the state constitution, including protections for abortion rights.
The amendment adds language that would extend protections to individuals from discrimination based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability or sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes, and reproductive healthcare and autonomy.
The state Constitution currently only protects individuals from discrimination based on race, color, creed or religion.
The amendment would also add a section to the state Constitution allowing for laws to be established that prevent or undo past discrimination.
Voting “yes” on the proposition would make these changes to the state Constitution and expand equal rights protections. Voting “no” would prevent these additions from being made and leave it as is.
The amendment is being featured on the state-wide ballot this November after it was passed over two consecutive state legislative sessions.
