The film ‘Schindler’s List,’ a tool for educators

The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County and Facing History and Ourselves will present Teaching Schindler’s List: Using Film to Explore the Holocaust, a professional development workshop for educators on Monday, April 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center, 100 Crescent Beach Road in Glen Cove.

How can we apply the lessons of the film “Schindler’s List” toward standing up to hatred in our own communities? How do you engage students in conversations around racism, antisemitism, and other forms of hatred?

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of “Schindler’s List,” Universal Pictures re-released the film for a limited theatrical engagement. Using this film in a classroom is an opportunity to help students raise questions about racism, anti-Semitism and other forms of exclusion in today’s political climate.

In the workshop, educators will explore a “facing history” approach with film to develop students’ literacy, historical analysis, and critical thinking skills and help students to foster empathy and perspective taking. This workshop will also explore the historical context of “Schindler’s List,” with a staff-led tour of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center’s state-of-the-art museum and interaction with rare artifacts related to the film.

The workshop is $25 to attend, payable via check to the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center on the day of the workshop. RSVP to facinghistory.org/newyork/events. Contact Helen Turner at helenturner@hmtcli.org or 516-571-8040 for more information.
