Jerry Torre, author of “The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens: A Memoir of the Beales, the Maysles Brothers, and Jacqueline Kennedy,” will return to the Cinema Arts Centre on Monday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m., to discuss his book along with a special screening of “That Summer,” the prequel to the Maysles brothers’ iconic documentary, “Grey Gardens.”
In the summer of 1972, Lee Radziwill, socialite and sister of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, asked photographer Peter Beard to help her make a film about her childhood on Long Island. Radziwill’s eccentric cousins, Edith Bouvier Beale and her mother Edith Ewing Bouvier, then became the focus of the project.
Three years before the Maysles’ landmark documentary introduced the world to the Beales, the mother-daughter duo living in a decaying dream world on Long Island, Beard chronicled life at their crumbling estate.
This long-lost footage, featuring glimpses of luminaries like Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, and Truman Capote, is assembled into “That Summer,” a one-of-a-kind family portrait bursting with the loving squabbles, quotable bon mots, and impromptu musical numbers that would make Big and Little Edie beloved cultural icons.
In “The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens,” Torre writes about his teenage days as caretaker of Grey Gardens, the now-celebrated mansion chronicled in these documentaries and two feature-length films, including the HBO drama starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange.
The book, co-written with film historian Tony Maietta, is a behind-the-scenes look at the Beales and their bizarre and reclusive life of squalor amidst the tremendous wealth of East Hampton, the family bond Torre developed with the Beales, and the day everything was turned upside down forever with the arrival of documentary filmmakers Albert and David Maysles.
The screening of “That Summer” and reception with Torre and Maietta, which includes a signed copy of their book, are part of the Cinema Art Centre’s Real to Reel series.  Tickets are $40 for members and $50 for the general public.
