Visit old New York via Zoom!

This spring the Roslyn Adult Education Program is offering a variety of historical presentations that can be enjoyed from the comfort of your home!

On March 30th, Art and Susan Zuckerman will present Murder, Mayhem, and Scandals in New York. The presentation will include outrageous incidents and dubious occurrences that are part of the city’s past, including: tarring and feathering, a great fire, a ravishing flood, riots, fascinating trials, and details about some of the most unsavory characters who ever lived in New York City. Musical New York goes beyond the city’s reputation for musical theater. The Zuckermans will delve into how music influenced New York and how New York influenced the world of music. You will hear about some of the jazz, rock and roll, and classical music artists who made New York their homes. It will be presented on April 27th.

Queens: The Borough of Historical, Cultural, Artistic, and Scientific Diversity will explore the fascinating neighborhoods and places that make Queens a unique borough. It will be presented on May 25th.

Before the Mall: Shopping during the Gilded Age – Ladies Mile to Madison Square Park, will be presented by Ginny Poleman on April 7th. At the turn of the century, there was the Ladies Mile, a string of large department stores lined up for ladies to window shop and purchase anything from a shirtwaist to a sack of potatoes.

On May 5th, Ms. Poleman will be your guide for a trip along one of New York’s most prestigious avenues in The Gilded Age Mansions of Museum Mile: From the Frick Collection to Cooper Hewitt. She will share photos and tell stories about the homes and their owners – people like Henry Clay Frick, Andrew Carnegie, Joseph Pulitzer, and other wealthy New Yorkers who spared no expense on these magnificent homes that still stand today.
