The Hillside Library is partnering with Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH)in doing a Baby Necessities Drive.  Needed items include baby clothes, feeding essentials (bottles, brushes, formula) bath essentials (washcloths, body wash etc.) and diapers.  As always, we thank you for your generosity.

PROGRAMS and EVENTS

Game Day for Adults! – Children’s Modular Room                                                        Friday, May 5 and May 12, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Spend Friday mornings with friends for fun and games! Join a group, or bring some friends for a rousing game of Rummy Cube, Scrabble, Chinese Checkers, MasterMind, or Bring Your Own! Coloring books and sheets also available. No registration necessary.

Movie – All Purpose Room                                                                                            Friday, May 5 at 1 p.m.  Join us in watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens on “Revenge of the Fifth”. As a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace.

Bingo – All Purpose Room                                                                                              Sunday, May 7 at 12:30 p.m. Join us for a fun game of Bingo!  Winners will win prizes!

Stony Brook Health Education: Finding Useful Health Information – Virtual Tuesday, May 10 at 12 noon. Join us for a conversation with health educators from Stony Brook Cancer Center and learn where to go for health information, tips on how to prepare for doctor appointments, and how to understand medical information.  Bring your questions!

When Stroke Strikes, Will You Be Ready? – Virtual                                                      Wednesday, May 10, 1:30 -2:30 p.m.  Stroke Prevention with Community Health Nurse Maura Calio. Learn exactly what a stroke is, ​how to lower your individual risk​​, ​what are indicative symptoms ​​and correct actions to take.

 From Garden to Table – All Purpose Room                                                                   Wednesday, May 10, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Are you thinking about starting a vegetable garden or just need a little advice? Let us help you learn to choose the right location for your veggies, prepare your soil, and decide between vegetables from seeds or transplants. Learn general maintenance needs that will lead to bountiful harvests with Master Gardener Susan Dittman.

Fresh Fiction Book Club – 1st Floor Modular Room and Virtual                                Wednesday, May 10 at 6:30 p.m. Four Treasures of the Sky by Jenny Zhang. “A dazzling debut novel set against the backdrop of the Chinese Exclusion Act, about a Chinese girl fighting to claim her place in the 1880s American West.”

Fatty Liver Disease: All You Need To Know – Virtual                                                  Thursday, May 11 at 6 p.m. What exactly is Fatty Liver Disease? Northwell Health’s Dr. Kalia will explain the different types, and what can you can do to protect your liver.

Adult Storytime with Sister Shamus – All Purpose Room                                            Friday, May 12, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Sister Shamus returns to the Library to engage and delight us with a lifetime of antics and fun, from growing up in a large Irish family throughout her years of service with the Domincan sisters.  Her 2014 book, The Spirit ‘Neath the Habit, will be available for sale. “Give me a sense of humor, Lord. Paint Night: Sketching and Acrylics with Alma Virtual                                                Friday, May 12 at 7 p.m. Love, anytime of the year! Alma demonstrates another variation of abstract painting, with more defined lines and bold color. YA Art Club – All Purpose Room                                                                                    Friday, May 5 at 5 p.m. Grades 5 – 12. New to art?  Come on down?  Already love art?  Join us for more.  With the use of a template, canvas, and more, create a unique art project with Ms. Ambadjes.  All participants will make a fun project even if you don’t have any prior art experience.  All projects will be displayed and returned the following class.

Stemtastic: Clorinda Takes Flight! – All Purpose Room                                        Monday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m. Ages: 4 – 6 years (with parent/caregiver).  Clorinda the cow, in Steven Kellogg’s Clorinda Takes Flight, is a cow who dreams of flying! We’ll share the story then try our hands at designing our own perfect flying machine.

Mother’s Day Painting Workshop! – All Purpose Room                                  Thursday, May 11 at 4:30 p.m. Grades: 1 – 3. Create a work of art for a special grown-up in your life! A fun-filled springtime painting activity where everything is authentic & painted with love!

Mother’s Day Gift with the Pom Pom Queen! – All Purpose Room                             Friday, May 12 at 4 p.m. Grades: 1 – 4. This program will help children celebrate someone that they love by creating a beautiful handcrafted Mother’s Day gift along with a handmade card. Materials Fee: $3

Mother’s Day Gift – All Purpose Room                                                                          Friday, May 12 at 5:30 p.m. Grades 5 – 12. Join the Pom Pom Queen in making a delightful Mother’s Day gift.  Each participant will make a unique decorative piece for their mom or someone special in their life.  $3 Materials Fee
