
March is Youth Art Month and The Hillside Public Library is having an Art Supply Drive for NYU Langone Child Life Program. Needed items are Coloring Books and Crayons. Free assistance is available for persons with incomes, $70,000 or less, who wish to have their taxes prepared by trained volunteers in the Volunteer Tax Assistance Program. You can call the library at 516 355-7850, x101 or 102 to schedule an appointment on any of the following days: Saturdays, March 4, 11, 18 or 25; April 1, 8 or 15. The following are the appointment times: 10:15 a.m.; 11:15 a.m.; 12:15 p.m. or 1:15 p.m.
The Ferguson Brothers Lynching on Long Island – All Purpose Room
Monday, March 6, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Author and Historian Christopher Verga discusses his latest book, The Ferguson Brothers Lynchings on Long Island: A Civil Rights Catalyst (History Press, 2022). On February 5, 1946, two African American men, brothers, were shot and killed by a white probationary police officer in Freeport, New York. The officer’s first shot struck 27-year-old Charles Ferguson, a World War II veteran, the second shot wounded Joseph Ferguson, both wearing military uniforms when they were shot. Join Chris for a discussion about the ensuing outcry and investigations that would spread far beyond the south shore of Long Island and bring the story of racial tensions on Long Island to the national level.
Make Your Own Lavender Spray – All Purpose Room Tuesday, March 7, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Soothe your senses with the calming scents of lavender with Marina Horan, local lavender grower at Centennial Gardens and proprietor of LavenderWorks.org. Lavender Works employs individuals with autism who work to make quality lavender products. A $5.00 materials fee will be collected at the beginning of the program, cash only please.

Tuesday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m. The book being discussed is: The Sweetness of Water by Nathan Harris. “In the waning days of the Civil War, brothers Prentiss and Landry—freed by the Emancipation Proclamation—seek refuge on the homestead of George Walker and his wife, Isabelle. The Walkers, wracked by the loss of their only son to the war, hire the brothers to work their farm, hoping through an unexpected friendship to stanch their grief.
