Temple Judea celebrates Hannukah outside

On a bitingly cold evening on the fourth night of Hannukah, Rabbi Todd Chizner led the community in the annual lighting of the nine-foot menorah that sits on a hill on the front lawn of Temple Judea facing Searingtown Road.

Chizner led the congregants with blessings of the holiday and traditional songs. All then went inside to the warmth of the Temple to enjoy the traditional treats of the holiday, including jelly donuts and latkes.

Many families brought their Hanukkah menorahs and lit candles together.

Another part of the evening’s celebration was led by Sarah Lauing, assistant director of URJ Crane Lake Camp. She demonstrated, using principles of chemistry, how to create a glowing Hannukah menorah. Director of education Lauren Resnikoff invited Sarah to lead the demonstration as a complement to the school’s new STEM based Judaic curriculum, J-Tech.
