Roslyn High School students scored big during the second round of the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF)—held on March 8, 2022 at Crest Hollow Country Club. About 25% of the projects presented in Round 1 qualified for Round 2, with 85% of Roslyn High School entrants invited back.

Sam Jacobson, Jessie Dong, and Brian Song all won Honorable Mention. Emily Yeh won a 3rd Place award and Maxx Yun won a 2nd Place award. Hailee Youn won a 1st Place award, earning herself a trip to the International Science and Engineering Fair this May in Atlanta. She presented an in-house political psychology project about voter turnout, which had previously earned her a spot as a Regeneron Finalist. Her research found that believing you hold a minority viewpoint increases the feeling that you have a responsibility to vote, and believing voter turnout will be high makes people more likely to intend to vote.

The participating students were mentored by Dr. Allyson Weseley. “After two years without any in-person science fairs, it was wonderful to see our students back to presenting live,” said Dr. Weseley. ‘To get to this point, they not only had to do phenomenal work, but they also had to be able to explain the work phenomenally well. They were amazing!”

The Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF) is a competition for the most advanced high school projects, and gives students the opportunity to present to professionals in their subject areas from local universities, scientific institutions, and professionals in the field.
