Port Washington Water District’s Do It For Port! campaign continues with student-focused events

The Port Washington Water District (PWWD) hosted the first part of its Do It For Port! Empowering Youth to Be Stewards of Port’s Water program at the Port Washington Public Library on May 18.

PWWD officials and other water experts were on hand to discuss the importance of water conservation with local students, while also providing them with methods as to how they can meet water conservation goals now and well into the future. Students were also introduced to the Do It For Port! Certificate of Service Program, which they can use to discover and implement conservation practices into their daily lives.

“It was exciting to watch Port students grasp the impact of conservation on the resiliency of our drinking water,” said PWWD Commissioner Mindy Germain. “Our younger generations deserve a voice, and we are arming them with the tools and resources to be lifelong protectors of our drinking water. We also give a special thanks to Raju Rajan of ReWild Long Island for educating students on native plants, an aspect of this event that was invaluable to students’ abilities to conserve water around their homes.”

The following day, students took a tour of the PWWD’s Plant 6 Treatment Facility. This helped them see firsthand everything that goes into providing the community with top-quality water, from the water’s extraction from the aquifer to its treatment at the plant to its distribution into the community. The District will conduct a second tour in the fall for all students who could not attend the first.

The PWWD also encourages students grades 3-12 to register for a tour of the Science Museum of Long Island grounds on Saturday, June 11 from 10 to 11 a.m. to learn more about native plants, sustainable gardens and other water conservation practices. This is a great opportunity for students to enroll in the Do It For Port! Certificate of Service program.
