The FOL’s lecture series, FOL U, returns with Dr. Shaireen Rasheed, Professor of Philosophy, Social Justice and Issues of Race and Multiculturalism in the College of Education at LIU Post,
speaking on “9/11 Twenty Years Later:Does Islam Need Reform and Do Afghani Women Need Saving?”
Dr. Rasheed explains: “By drawing on War on Terror rhetoric as it pertains to the ‘liberation of Muslim women,’ I hope to elucidate how Muslim women’s bodies have become the site of confrontation between cultural differences and the force of state power. By exploring the relationship between colonialism, sexism and Islamophobia, my talk will show how such discourse has enabled the West to define itself as sexually progressive and inclusive of differences. This recognition is part of a politics of exceptionalism constructing the ‘West’ as a sanctuary for Muslim women that includes them, protects them from the violence of their communities, and gives them opportunities to make their voices heard.”
Dr. Rasheed received her M.A. from the New School for Social Research and an M. Phil. and PhD in Philosophy from Columbia University. She has been a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Salzburg, and a visiting researcher at the Harvard Divinity School, Columbia Law School and New York University. She is also a diversity/equity/inclusion consultant and currently serves on the Port Washington School District’s Diversity Taskforce.
This program will be presented both in-person and virtually.
