Artist Talk with PWPL Artist in Residence Lori Horowitz
3:00 PM Lapham Meeting Room
Working from her studio on Long Island, New York, artist Lori Horowitz has crafted a wholly unique practice for her art, which thematically re-humanizes anonymous people as well as elements of nature that we encounter every day. This provides intriguing narratives, and formally stretches the bounds of the materials she chooses to work in. We are at a unique moment in time when social interactions, judgments and behavior are rapidly changing. Horowitz draws from historical use of relief sculpture and brings these methods to current topics. Participants are invited to join us in person or via Zoom. Register at www.pwpl.org/events. Hempstead Harbor Woods – Port Washington’s Greatest Hidden Treasure
7:00 PM Lapham Meeting Room
As part of the Library’s celebration of Earth Day, join us for a story of transformation and natural regeneration of the area originally known as the Hempstead Harbor Sand Pits, located on the eastern edge of the Port Washington peninsula, into a protected area now referred to as the Hempstead Harbor Woods. This presentation will focus on the local history, geology, habitats, and wetlands of the area, and its diversity of life with a story told with photographs and maps. Over 400 species have been identified and over 20 distinct types of habitats have been described. In the center of the area is Port Washington’s largest wetland, a mosaic of seasonally flooded ponds, streams, marsh, swamp, wet meadow, and islands.
In addition, the presentation will also examine the surrounding Hempstead Harbor Beach Park area that is undergoing environmental conservation, restoration, and development projects. The presentation takes a broad approach to understanding the relationship of humans with, and our environmental impacts on, flora and fauna, habitats, wetlands, climate, and hydrology over the last decade and century.
David Jakim, who will lead this presentation, holds an MS in environmental geoscience and an MA in Earth science education. Nonfiction Book Discussion
1:30 PM Hagedorn Meeting Room
On a midsummer day in 1776, three friends disappear near the Kentucky settlement of Boonesboro, the echoes of their screams lingering in the air. A Cherokee-Shawnee raiding party has taken the girls as the latest salvo against the colonial settlers who have decimated native lands and resources. Hanging Maw, the raiders’ leader, recognizes one of the captives as Jemima Boone, daughter of Kentucky’s most influential pioneers, and realizes she could be a valuable pawn in the battle to drive the colonists out of the Kentucky territory for good. With Daniel Boone and his posse in pursuit, Hanging Maw devises a plan that could ultimately bring greater peace both to the tribes and the colonists. In this enthralling narrative, Matthew Pearl unearths a forgotten and dramatic series of events from early in the Revolutionary War, providing a window into America’s transition from colony to nation. Copies of the book are available on Libby and may also be reserved for pickup at the library. Participants are invited to join us in person or via zoom for this hybrid event. Art Lecture with Thomas Germano – Earth Art – Part 2

Earth Art uses the natural landscape to create structures, art forms, and sculptures. Earth art is monumental, with the favored materials being those extracted directly from nature. Artists working with the earth, upon the earth will be the theme in this lecture by Thomas Germano and is part of the Library’s celebration of Earth Day. Participants are invited to join us in person or via Zoom. Register at www.pwpl.org/events

Sandwiched In with Max Friedman – Author of “Painful Joy – A Holocaust Family Memoir”
12:00 PM Lapham Meeting Room
As a journalist, writer and author, Max Friedman has spent his working life writing hundreds of stories about others. With Painful Joy, he turns to an area he had avoided for most of his life — the lives of his parents. He and his sister were born to Sam and Frieda, Holocaust survivors who grew up in poverty in Poland, and met and married there after liberation from the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The family emigrated to the US, seeking a new beginning, but their horrific experiences during the war held them back from any life that could be considered normal. His father spoke about the war just once. His mother spoke every day about the camps, sometimes as bedtime tales. When Max wanted to find out more, he discovered that what his parents had told him were reimagined fragments of complicated realities. Max shares with readers what really happened to them and it is the hardest story he has ever had to write. Books will be available for purchase and signing. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and will be offered both in-person and via Zoom. Please register at www.pwpl.org/events
