The Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District recently honored the service of two outgoing members of its board of directors, Dr. Bill Haagenson and Port Washington North Mayor Bob Weitzner.

Haagenson is a founding member of the BID board and played a pivotal role in its creation.

Over his nearly 30-year tenure, he provided a voice for the Village of Baxter Estates in fostering economic development and enhancing the commercial landscape of Greater Port Washington. His strategic connections and historical perspective have been instrumental in several successful projects, especially in the founding of the BID.

“I am very happy to have had the opportunity to serve on the BID board,” Haagenson said. “From the time that Roy Smitheimer first spoke with me about the formation back in 1996 and my anticipated appointment to the board as a representative of the Village of Baxter Estates I was eager to add input to the business community.  I have always thought that if you love where you live you must get involved to help keep it thriving. The BID has always been a wonderful apolitical entity enhances and implements changes to make the Port Washington community better place for businesses, residents and visitors.  Working with the many different like-minded board members and executive directors through the years has been gratifying and enlightening.  Many people with many ideas and suggestions which have led to many improvements and additions to our unique town. I feel privileged to have been on the board since its inception and if I was able to help in the changes that have taken place then it has been time well spent.”

Weitzner has been a driving force in community engagement and collaborative efforts between local government and businesses, BID officials said.

“It was an honor serving on the Board of the P. W. BID,” Weitzner said. “It was especially gratifying to promote the BID’s mission by assisting new and existing businesses in their efforts to serve our community. I feel that being part of the BID was akin to being part of an amazing family. I wish to thank the Board for their friendship and knowledge, and I will continue to do what I can to assist them in their future efforts.”
