North Hempstead Town Councilmember Mariann Dalimonte recently attended the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life fundraising event at Paul D. Schreiber High School on June 1.

This was a special event, as it was the first Relay for Life hosted in Port Washington in many years, spearheaded by a proactive young student Alexa Benun.

Ultimately, Alexa and her team raised over $25,000. Dalimonte presented Alexa with a Proclamation of Recognition on behalf of the Town of North Hempstead.

Dalimonte stated, “Many months ago, I received an email from Alexa asking me for guidance. When we met in my office, she told me why she wanted to make this happen. Her Grandmother Mirta was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, and she needed to do something. Hearing her grandmother and all the survivors speak this evening was genuinely moving.”
