Photographs celebrate iconic New York City imagery

New York City is the star of the Hofstra University Museum of Art exhibition New York, New York: Photographs from the Collection, a showcase of black-and-white images from 1932 to 2008, curated by photographer Susannah Ray.

The exhibition features works by photographers such as Berenice Abbott, Diane Arbus, Andreas Feininger, Harold Feinstein, Donna Ferrato, Joel Meyerowitz, Dorothy Norman, and Garry Winogrand.

“The Hofstra University Museum of Art collection contains more than 900 photographs which cover a vast array of subject matter,” said Museum Director Karen T. Albert. “The works in this exhibition capture New York City in its infinite complexity and variety, celebrating its iconic architecture, everyday signage, authentic faces, and dynamic street scenes.”

New York, New York: Photographs from the Collection will be on view from Sept. 6 – Dec. 9, at the Emily Lowe Gallery behind Emily Lowe Hall on Hofstra University’s South Campus.

The public is invited to an opening reception for the Museum’s two fall exhibitions: New York, New York and Off the Press on Thursday, Sept. 8, 4:30-6:30 p.m., featuring special remarks by Ms. Ray and Ms. Albert. Light refreshments will be available.

Join Susannah Ray, guest curator of New York, New York: Photographs from the Collection, for a curator-led tour of the exhibition. She will share her insights and thoughts about the photographs she selected.

VIRTUAL PUBLIC PROGRAM
Second Fridays: Cityscapes – 20th Century Photographs of New York City
This program highlights a selection of photographs of New York City throughout the 20th century from the 1930s to the 2000s, focusing on the built environment including images of architecture and transportation – program recorded on Nov. 12, 2021.
