Director’s Notes Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee is based on the infamous 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, in which a high school science teacher, John Scopes, was brought to trial in Dayton, Tennessee for violating the recently-passed Butler Act, which prohibited the teaching of human evolution in any public school.
The play brilliantly dramatizes the trial as we see Henry Drummond take on Matthew Harrison Brady (characters based on real-life lawyers Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan) in the hopeful battle for a nation strong enough to hold us all.
