North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the members of the town board remind residents that Project Independence is offering free, cashless transportation for medical and food shopping trips throughout the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The town will be paying for all costs associated with Project Independence transportation rides, including tips for the drivers.
“These policies are intended to assist residents as the Town continues its efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus,” Bosworth said. “We are providing an essential service to our seniors, and we want to do everything we can to help them during this extremely challenging time. We are also aiming to minimize the spread by eliminating the need for riders to hand over any cash to our drivers.”
Project Independence, the town’s aging-in-place initiative, began covering the costs of transportation fees back in April. The program has since been extended to help further assist senior residents.
Residents can call 311 or 516-869-6311, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., to make an appointment.
