Movie! Courage Under Fire – Rating: R.  All Purpose Room

Friday, May 31 at 1 p.m. “Lt. Col. Nathaniel Serling (Denzel Washington) was the commander of a unit during Operation Desert Storm who mistakenly ordered the destruction of what he believed to be an enemy tank.

To redeem himself, Serling is given a new assignment by his superior, Gen. Hershberg (Michael Moriarty). Capt. Karen Walden (Meg Ryan) was a helicopter pilot who died in battle during the Iraqi conflict and Serling is asked to investigate Walden’s actions on the field of battle.”

Monday, June 3 at 6 p.m. Keystone plants are critical to building a robust ecosystem that provides habitat and food for wildlife and people. Learn what plants are keystones on Long Island, how to identify them and include them in your garden. Help repot some keystone plants and take one home!

A $5.00 materials fee will be collected at the start of the program.

Tuesday, June 4 at 6:30 p.m. The book being discussed is: The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom.

Growing Native Plants in Your Yard – All-Purpose Room

Wednesday, June 5, 6 – 7:30 p.m. Why is everybody talking about native plants?
In this lecture, we will discuss native plants, how they differ from their non-native counterparts, and why they are important to consider when making plant choices for your landscape. We will also cover examples of native plants suitable for a home landscape on Long Island and explain how to incorporate native plants into your garden.

Art History: Women in Art – Virtual

Thursday, June 6, 1 – 2 p.m. Artist and art historian Sue Altman will discuss many important women from the Renaissance to the present day. From Renaissance portrait painters to the still life painters of the Dutch Golden Age, accomplished Impressionists to the many important 20th-century women in Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Feminist Art, this lecture explores artists both obscure and well known.

Early Baseball on Long Island! – Virtual

Thursday, June 6, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Author Historian Prof. Christopher Verga discusses the first Black baseball league, the Cuban Giants, founded in Long Island and how baseball helped promote the expansion of civil rights. Prof. Verga makes history fun and accessible for everybody! 

Movie! Saving Private Ryan – Rating: R. All Purpose Room

Friday, June 7 at 1 p.m. Join us for the 80th anniversary of D-Day (June 6, 1944) with this special movie screening. “A U.S. Army captain leads a mission to rescue a GI trapped behind enemy lines in France on D-Day after all three of the soldier’s brothers are killed in action. As the search commences, the close-knit squad sets out through areas still thick with Nazis.”
