The Hillside Public Library is sponsoring a Basic First Aid Supplies Drive to support Ukraine. Needed items include Band Aids, Sterile Eye Dressings; Gauze Dressings; Safety Pins; Tweezers and Scissors; Skin Rash Creams; Pain Relievers and Digital Thermometers. There is a bin at the library for your donations, and we thank you for your generosity.

Hillside Public Library is partnering with Long Island Coalition for the Homeless in a School Supply Drive. Needed items include the following: Staplers and staples; Post-Its; Pencil Sharpeners; Lunch boxes; Highlighters; Paper Clips; 3 Hole Punches; White out; Permanent Markers and Backpacks. Donation boxes are at the library.

PROGRAMS and EVENTS
Summer Ceramics: Pineapple Lantern – All Purpose Room 2nd Floor Friday, July 22 at 5 p.m. Add fairy lights or a battery operated candle for a delightful glow in your home! The class will include the ceramic, paints, brushes and instructions. $5.00 fee for materials, cash only please. This program is for patrons 18 years of age and older.

Sharks of New York and Long Island! – Virtual Monday, July 25 at 6:30 p.m. Explore Oceans of Possibilities with the Whaling Museum of Cold Spring Harbor! Did you know sharks have existed longer than trees? Discover the range of magnificent and diverse shark species we share our local shores and waters with. Find out about shark myths and the histories of shark attacks in New York.

The Art of Seed Saving – Virtual Tuesday, July 26 at 6:30 p.m. Join the “Master Gardeners” from the Nassau County Extension of the Cornell University Cooperative as they offer an insightful presentation that details what seeds are, the pollination process, the differences between heirlooms & pollinated seeds, and the basics of “seed saving”.

Reducing Anxiety Through Meditation – Virtual Wednesday, July 27 at 1:30 p.m. Doctors and medical practitioners are promoting the benefits of meditation to relieve stress and anxiety reduction in our anxiety. Meditation helps us replace anxiety with joy and peace. Join Dr. Frank Pawlowski , long time meditator for this informative lecture. There will even be a short meditation sitting. Frank Pawlowski Ed.D. is an Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance School of Education at Iona College and has been a practitioner of meditation since 1972, and since 2004 he has been giving Workshops on the Benefits of Meditation. This program is brought to you courtesy of Nassau Libraries Health Share.

Black Earth, Red Earth, and Lumpy Beer – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor and Virtual Wednesday, July 27 at 6:30 p.m. Explore Oceans of Possibilities and discover new worlds and foods with Food Historian and Educator, Andrew Coletti! The Greeks and Romans thrived on wine, but their contemporaries, the Egyptians, were all about beer. Living off the rich “black earth” of the Nile a stone’s throw from the lifeless “red earth” of the desert, the Ancient Egyptians developed a food culture as unique as their environment. This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Headaches and Migraines 2022: Advancing Forward – Virtual Thursday, July 28 at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Noah Rosen discusses the most common forms of headache, reviews the current understanding of migraines, and updates on current treatments.

Shark Frenzy with Johnda Ferarri – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Monday, July 25 at 4:30 p.m. Ages: 7 years- 11 years. Join Johnda for tons of fins and fun! Experiments, shark trivia, games and a craft!

YA Ocean Frame – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Tuesday, July 26 at 4 p.m. Grades 5 – 12. Design an ocean themed picture frame to hold your favorite summer photo. $2 Materials Fee

Wildlife Fun at Hillside! – Children’s Room, 2nd Floor Wednesday, July 27 at 6:30 p.m. Grades: (going into) 1-4. Jason Reilly is back with his frogs, bugs, and other furry friends! Meet Princess the Toad, Tickles the Hedgehog and Chica the Chinchilla and learn cool facts about each animal. This program will include singing, laughing, bubbles and of course a chance to touch and pet the animals!

Play Hooray – Children’s Room, 2nd Floor Thursday, July 28 at 11:30 a.m. Ages: 9 months- 5 years (with parent/caregiver). Stories, music and movement activities with Mollie the Mouse!

Summer Salsa with Chef of D’Future (JUV) – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Thursday, July 28 at 5 p.m. Grades: (going into) 1-4. Chef Julie is back and ready to make a delicious summer salsa! Materials Fee: $2
