The Hillside Public Library is sponsoring a Basic First Aid Supplies Drive to support Ukraine. Needed items include Band Aids, Sterile Eye Dressings; Gauze Dressings; Safety Pins; Tweezers and Scissors; Skin Rash Creams; Pain Relievers and Digital Thermometers. There is a bin at the library for your donations, and we thank you for your generosity.
PROGRAMS and EVENTS
Intro to American Sign Language – In-person and Virtual Friday, June 24 at 10 a.m. Introduction to ASL, Deaf Culture and ASL foundational rules: In this beginner series we will learn the foundational concepts of American Sign Language. All levels are welcomed but this series is designed for those with little or no experience. This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. Fridays at 10am June 24; July 8, 15, 22, 29; August 5, 12, 19 (Please register 1x for entire series)

Paint Night: Ice Cream Sundae – BYOF: Bring your own flavors! – Virtual Friday, June 24 at 7 p.m. National Ice Cream Day is Sunday, July 17! Celebrate early and sketch and paint a mouthwatering classic – or use your own favorite flavor – Ice Cream Sundae with Alma to celebrate this delicious day! From beginners to advanced sketchers and painters, enjoy a fun and relaxing evening painting in the comfort of your own home. For a list of supplies needed, please go to the library’s website.

The Giglio Feast of Brooklyn: Building Upon Solid Roots – In Person and Virtual Saturday, June 25 at 1 p.m. Come join Professor Sal Primeggia from Adelphi University as he speaks about the Giglio Feast! The Giglio has always been a meeting ground. This is the ritual, which brought the old-world values to new-world Williamsburg. It continues to bring together religion, heritage, community and identity, while passing on traditions, values, and a sense of purpose through the generations. This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Weekly Summer Trivia: Oceans and Sea Creatures Monday, June 27. Help kick off our Summer Reading Program with an Oceans of Possibilities themed trivia! Sign up to be emailed the Oceans and Sea Creatures trivia!

Italian Genealogy 2.0 – Both in-person and Virtual Monday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. Join the Family Tree Climber, professional Genealogist Sarah Gutmann, and learn how to unlock and navigate the (free) Italian archives website. We will go over what records are available and what information they hold. Don’t be intimidated by the Italian language! We will learn the standard format and keywords and phrases to help you extract the information you need. Inner and Outer Peace Through Meditation – Virtual Wednesday, June 29 at 1:30 p.m.. Meditation is the key to reducing stress and living a life of peace and love. Learn how to achieve a state of tranquility during this informative and educational program. There will be a short meditation sitting too! Join Arlene Samsel for this educational workshop. Arlene Samsel is uniquely qualified and experienced in meditation, public speaking, and the performing arts and has given many meditation workshops.

Baking with the Bread Monk – Virtual Wednesday, June 29 at 6:30 p.m. Ex Uno Plures: One Dough, Many Breads! Learn how to make a versatile basic sweet dough that can be used for a variety of breads and coffeecakes.

Epic Tomatoes From Your Garden with Craig LeHoullier – Virtual Thursday, June 30 at 6:30 p.m. Craig LeHoullier, bestselling author and tomato adviser for Seed Savers Exchange, will present everything a garden enthusiast needs to know about growing tomatoes — from sowing seeds and planting to cultivating and collecting seeds at the end of the season. He will also talk about various pests and diseases of tomatoes and explain how best to avoid them.

Virtual Tea Tasting: Lemon Lovers! Thursday, June 30 at 7 p.m. Ages: Teen – Adult. Join Ms. Ambadjes in tasting a variety of different lemon teas! Pick up your tea goody bags curbside the week of the program, so you can sip along as you learn about each flavor and different types of tea.

Summer Bingo! – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Friday, July 1 at 12 noon. Join us for a fun game of Bingo! Winners will win prizes!

Summer Sing Along: Fourth of July – All Purpose Room, 2n Floor Friday, July 1 at 2 p.m. Join us for a Summer Sing Along with Marilyn McClean, featuring Patriotic Music to celebrate the Fourth of July! No singing experience is required! All are welcome to come and celebrate the Fourth of July with some music. Songs such as God Bless America, the Star Spangled Banner, and This Land is Your Land will be sung! This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Spanish 101 – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor
Tuesday, July 5 at 12 noon and on the following dates at 12 noon: Tuesdays and Wednesdays: 7/5, 7/6, 7/12, 7/13, 7/19, 7/20, 7/26, 7/27, 8/2, 8/3. Have you wanted to learn Spanish before, but just haven’t been able to? Join us for this series of classes led by aspiring Spanish teacher Anna Komninos! These classes will cover the basics of Spanish and provide an introductory level of instruction. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required! This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

CHILDREN and YOUNG ADULT EVENTS
Exploring the Ocean Deep: Fish That Glow! – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Monday, June 27 at 4:30 p.m. Grades: 2-4. Join Stemtastic and discover unusual creatures such as the angler and flashlight fish that call the deep ocean their home. Participants will use their engineering skills to design and build their own deep sea fish with some circuitry that will allow them to light up!

Learn Magic with Ari Bisk – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Wednesday, June 29 at 5 p.m. Grades: 2-4. Join professional magician Ari Bisk and learn beginner magic tricks to perform for your friends and family! After each trick Ari will teach the secrets and how to perform them. It is recommended that participants have a deck of playing cards.

Under the Sea Stuffed Animal Workshop – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Thursday, June 30 at 5 p.m. Grades: K-4. Participants will hand stuff a 16″ toy animal and dress it. Participants will also receive a care bag and a birth certificate for their new friend. Material Fee: $7. Please go to the library’s website for a list of the Animal Selections.
