The Hillside Public Library is sponsoring a Basic First Aid Supplies Drive to support Ukraine. Needed items include Band Aids, Sterile Eye Dressings; Gauze Dressings; Safety Pins; Tweezers and Scissors; Skin Rash Creams; Pain Relievers and Digital Thermometers.

There is a bin at the library for your donations, and we thank you for your generosity.

Summer Bingo! – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Friday, July 1 at 12 noon. Join us for a fun game of Bingo! Winners will win prizes!

Summer Sing Along: Fourth of July – All Purpose Room, 2n Floor Friday, July 1 at 2 p.m. Join us for a Summer Sing Along with Marilyn McClean, featuring Patriotic Music to celebrate the Fourth of July! No singing experience is required!

All are welcome to come and celebrate the Fourth of July with some music. Songs such as God Bless America, the Star Spangled Banner, and This Land is Your Land will be sung! This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Spanish 101 – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor
Tuesday, July 5 at 12 noon and on the following dates at 12 noon: Tuesdays and Wednesdays: 7/5, 7/6, 7/12, 7/13, 7/19, 7/20, 7/26, 7/27, 8/2, 8/3. Have you wanted to learn Spanish before, but just haven’t been able to? Join us for this series of classes led by aspiring Spanish teacher Anna Komninos! These classes will cover the basics of Spanish and provide an introductory level of instruction. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required! This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Gifts of the Sun: The Cuisine of the Aztecs – In Person (All Purpose Room) and Virtual Wednesday, July 6 at 6:30 p.m. A Delicious Discussion with Food Historian and Educator, Andrew Coletti! When the first Spanish conquerors arrived in present-day Mexico in the 16th century, they were astounded by what they found.

The cultural achievements of the native peoples of Mesoamerica rivaled anything back in Europe: there was great architecture, great literature, and yes, great food. This class is a celebration of the ingenious foodways of the pre-conquest Aztecs.

We’ll also taste a few Aztec recipes, like a corn-based beverage and a “superfood” harvested from lakes. This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Classic Book Club – Virtual Wednesday, July 6 at 7 p.m. The book being discussed is: “So Big” by Edna Ferber. “So Big” is a 1924 novel written by Edna Ferber. The book was inspired by the life of Antje Paarlberg in the Dutch community of South Holland, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. It was a best-seller in the United States and won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1925.”

Fiction Loves History Book Club – In person (Modular Rm. 1st Floor) and Virtual Thursday, July 7 at 6:30 p.m. The book being discussed is: Three Words for Goodbye by Hazel Gaynor. “From Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb, the bestselling authors of Meet Me in Monaco, comes a coming-of-age novel set in pre-WWII Europe, perfect for fans of Jennifer Robson, Beatriz Williams, and Kate Quinn.”

Scrimshaw Art – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Friday, July 8 at 5 p.m. Discover an art form popularized during the age of whaling. Learn from staff at the Cold Spring Whaling Museum how whalers carved teeth, bone, and baleen into beautiful works of art with hidden meanings, Each person will be able to create their own scrimshaw art on a keepsake box. A $5.00 materials fee will be collected at the start of the program. YA Summer Snacks – All Purpose Room – 2nd Floor Tuesday, July 5 at 4 p.m. Grades 5 – 12. Create delicious summer themed snacks with Ms. Ambadjes!

Stemtastic: Who Sank the Boat? – All Purpose Room – 2nd Floor Wednesday, July 6 at 4:30 p.m. Ages: Pre-K- 6 years (with parent/caregiver). Join Stemtastic to learn about floating, sinking, and balancing aboard a floating object. Experiment and discover how boats stay afloat. Build & design your own boats after listening to the story “Who Sank the Boat” by Pamela Allen.

Sea the World with LuAnn Adams! – Children’s Room, 2nd Floor Thursday, July 7 at 6:30 p.m. Grades: (going into) K & Up. Multi-talented storyteller, Lu Ann Adams is returning for another visit! “How the Dolphin Came to Be & other tales of the Deep Blue Sea”- is a rollicking collection of nautical folktales! Lots of audience participation to bring the tales of the sea, “to life”! Don’t miss the fun! Shark Attack: Story & Craft – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Friday, July 8 at 3:30 p.m. Grades (going into) K-3. Get ready to take a bite out of some fin-tastic books! Join in for some deep sea songs & a jaw-some craft, too!*Please note registration begins for HPL Card Holders on June 28th @ 10am and all other cardholders on July 1st.
