Intro to American Sign Language – In-person and Virtual Friday, June 10 at 10 a.m. Introduction to ASL, Deaf Culture and ASL foundational rules: In this beginner series we will learn the foundational concepts of American Sign Language. All levels are welcomed but this series is designed for those with little or no experience. This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. Cat Adoption Event Saturday, June 18, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Join us at the library to meet some cool cats available for adoption and learn about the efforts of a local cat rescue group, the Give Me Shelter Project.
Brain Fitness for Everybody – Virtual Tuesday, June 21 at 2:30 p.m. and the following Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m. June 28, July 12, 19, 26; August 2. *Please register only 1x for the series of classes. This Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center’s Brain Fitness Workshops series is intended for those who do not have a diagnosis of memory impairment. These classes are uniquely designed for those who are interested in being proactive in maintaining and enhancing their cognitive abilities. Sessions help stimulate the areas of the brain that are susceptible to age-related decline.
Gentle Yoga and Tibetan Bowls with Micheline – Virtual Tuesday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. Celebrate International Yoga Day! Join us for a relaxing, healing session. This class is open to anyone. We will work with breath work getting grounded and relaxed. Followed by a gentle yoga flow allowing the body to release tension through gentle movement and stretching in preparation for a nice yoga nidra practice. Yoga Nidra is the practice of softening one body part at a time without creating any movement and allows for deep relaxation and healing.
Armchair Historians Book Club – All-Purpose Room 2nd Floor and Virtual Wednesday, June 22 at 6:30 p.m. The book being discussed is: Hero of Two Worlds: The Marquis de Lafayette in the Age of Revolution by Mike Duncan. “A thrilling story of the Marquis de Lafayette’s lifelong quest to defend the principles of liberty and equality.”
Author Book Discussion: A Memoir of My Irish Boyhood – In-Person and Virtual Thursday, June 23 at 6:30 p.m. Join author Tom Phelan as he talks about his childhood in Ireland and reads selections from “We Were Rich and We Didn’t Know It: A Memoir of My Irish Boyhood”. Phelan, who was born in County Laois in the Irish midlands and spent his formative years working with his wise and demanding father as he sought to wrest a livelihood from a farm that was often wet, muddy, and back-breaking. It was a time before rural electrification, the telephone, and indoor plumbing; a time when the Church exerted enormous control over Ireland. The Giglio Feast of Brooklyn: Building Upon Solid Roots – In Person and Virtual Saturday, June 25 at 1 p.m. Come join Professor Sal Primeggia from Adelphi University as he speaks about the Giglio Feast! The Giglio has always been a meeting ground. This is the ritual, which brought the old-world values to new-world Williamsburg. It continues to bring together religion, heritage, community and identity, while passing on traditions, values, and a sense of purpose through the generations.
