The Library is sponsoring a Basic First Aid Supplies Drive to support Ukraine. Needed items include Band Aids, Sterile Eye Dressings; Gauze Dressings; Safety Pins; Tweezers and Scissors; Skin Rash Creams; Pain Relievers and Digital Thermometers. There is a bin at the library for your donations, and we thank you for your generosity.

PROGRAMS and EVENTS
Intro to American Sign Language – In person and Virtual Friday, June 10 at 10 a.m. Introduction to ASL, Deaf Culture and ASL foundational rules: In this beginner 10-week series we will learn the foundational concepts of American Sign Language. All levels are welcomed but this series is designed for those with little or no experience. This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. Fridays at 10am June 10, 17, 24; July 8, 15, 22, 29; Aug. 5, 12, 19 (Please register 1x for entire series)

Paint Night: Celebrate the Summer Solstice! – Virtual Friday, June 10 at 7 p.m. Sail into the Summer Solstice with Artist Alma, as she demonstrates sketching a serene scene then painting with acrylics. From beginners to advanced sketchers and painters, enjoy a fun and relaxing evening painting in the comfort of your own home. For a list of supplies needed, please go to the library’s website.

Media Images of Italian-Americans: Perceptions Do Matter! – In-person and Virtual Saturday, June 11 at 1 p.m. Join Professor Sal Primeggia from Adelphi University for this program about Italian-Americans. There has been a sad long history of Italian-Americans being stereotyped throughout the media.

We will look at that history of these negative portrayals and test them against the reality of the positive contributions that Italian-Americans have made to American society. This program is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Gratefulness and Mindfulness – Virtual Tuesday, June 14 at 1 p.m. Presented by: NY Project Hope. Learn effective strategies to engage and embrace gratefulness and mindfulness for more fulfilling connections in your life. This program is brought to you courtesy of Nassau Libraries Health Share.

Planning without Fear: Estate Planning Basics – Virtual Tuesday, June 14 at 6:30 p.m. Beth Polner Abrahams, Esq. discusses basics about Wills, different types of Trusts, including special needs trusts, and other estate plan options, and advance directives such as powers of attorney and health care proxies/livings wills. Bring your questions!

Library Board of Trustee’s Meeting – Virtual Tuesday, June 14 at 7 p.m.

Stony Brook Health Education: Know the Facts about Skin and Sun Safety – Virtual Wednesday, June 15 at 12 noon. Join the Dynamic Duo, Jackie and Annalea, Health Educators from Stony Brook Cancer Center for an overview of skin and sun safety, what causes skin cancer, symptoms to look for, and screening recommendations. This program is brought to you courtesy of Nassau Libraries Health Share.

Mystery Book Club – In person and Virtual Wednesday, June 15 at 6:30 p.m. The book being discussed is: Who is Maud Dixon? by Alexandra Andrews. “A stylish psychological thriller about an eager publishing assistant with the opportunity to jumpstart her dream life.”

Personal Financial Focus: Inflation and Your Retirement – Virtual Thursday, June 16 at 6:30 p.m. Certified Financial Planner Marc Wong discusses how to navigate and protect retirement income in an inflationary environment and volatile market.

In-Person: Plant and Garden Club Thursday, June 16 at 6:30 p.m. Calling all gardeners, of all levels and interests! Join the Plant and Garden Club and exchange seeds, rooted cuttings, and plants with fellow gardeners of all skills and interests.
The Library Plant and Garden Club meets every 3rd Thursday of the month, from April through October 2022.

Cat Adoption Event Saturday, June 18: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Join us at the library to meet some cool cats available for adoption and learn about the efforts of a local cat rescue group, the Give Me Shelter Project.

CHILDREN and YOUNG ADULT EVENTS
Time for Kids: Summer Sail Boat! – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Tuesday, June 14 at 4:30 p.m. Ages: 3 years- 7 years (with parent/caregiver). Come join A Time for Kids, Inc. as we sail into summer in this family fun preschool program! Activities include music, movement, fine & gross motor development and storytelling. There will also be a sailboat craft!

Father’s Day Ceramics – All Purpose Room, 2nd Floor Thursday, June 16 at 4 p.m. Grades 1 – 4. Paint a Father’s Day themed ceramic plaque! *There is a $3 Materials Fee for this program.

Play Hooray – Children’s Room; 2nd Floor Friday, June 17 at 11 a.m. Ages: 18 months & Up (with parent/caregiver). Stories, music and movement activities with Mollie the Mouse.

Virtual Paint Night Friday, June 17 at 7 p.m. Grades 5 – 12. Join our artist Alma as she guides you through a step-by-step virtual painting. No experience necessary. Beginners are welcome! Please go to the library’s website for a list of supplies needed.
