Troop 201 Herricks Boy Scouts Brian Keating and Michael Chao had their board of review on Tuesday and earned the rank of Eagle Scouts, the highest honor in Scouting.

Keating and Chao, both 18, have been Scouts for over nine years. They started with Cub Scouts in Pack 201 and Pack 202, respectively, in 3rd or 4th grade and then moved up to Boy Scouts in Troop 201 for seven years from 5th to 12th grade.

Troop 201’s  Scoutmaster is Jeff Helgeson.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America program. Since its inception in 1911, only four percent of Scouts have earned this rank after a lengthy review process. Over 2.5 million youth have earned the rank.

Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, 14 of which are mandatory for the award.

An Eagle Scout must demonstrate Scout spirit, an ideal attitude based upon the Scout Oath and Law, service, and leadership.

This includes an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. Eagle Scouts are presented with a medal and a badge that visibly recognizes their accomplishments.

Additional recognition can be earned through Eagle Palms, awarded for completing additional tenure, leadership, and merit badge requirements.

An official Eagle Court of Honor Ceremony will be held tentatively in January or May  2025.
