In honor of the Lunar New Year, Garden City Park School students have been learning about the holiday and taking part in various classroom activities.

Kindergartners in Kristen Guarasci’s class were visited by ENL teacher Tamara Chyi, who shared how she and her family celebrate the Lunar New Year. Mrs. Chyi taught the class how to say “happy New Year” in Chinese, lucky foods to eat and how people around the world celebrate this holiday. Additionally, she taught the students how to make dumplings using Play-Doh and how to use chopsticks.

In Grace Yang’s fourth grade class, students learned how different Asian countries celebrate the New Year. They also heard from their peers who celebrate the holiday. The class learned the history behind why it is called the Lunar New Year, as well as ways to bring good luck this year.
