Students taking Studio Art class at Roslyn Middle School finally saw a delayed group project go on display in the cafeteria. The art is a reflection of the work of famous black artists Jean Michelle Basquiat, Mickalene Thomas, and Corey Barksdale.

Under the direction of Studio Art teacher Terrie Lorge, students studied Basquiat’s raw emotional expressions, Mickalene Thomas’ celebration of black women, and Barksdale’s rhythmic portraits. They discussed the underrepresentation of black artists and the importance for people to see themselves in art. Then, working in groups of three, students took original images and split it into four equal parts and enlarged them using a grid method. Using cray pas, paint, glitter, and rhinestones, they created a finished image.

“The new artwork is not only lively and visually dynamic, but it also mirrors the ever changing population in Roslyn’s community,” said Studio Art teacher Terrie Lorge. “It is encouraging for the students to see proud and beautiful black models adorning the walls of the cafeteria. It’s especially impactful for them to know that the artwork was created in collaboration by fellow students.”

The project began in the 2019-20 school year, but was interrupted by the closure of schools in spring 2020. After being stored for a year and a half, the art was hung permanently inside the Roslyn Middle School cafeteria.

“I am so happy to see this work on full display. It highlights student achievement and the importance of diversity in the arts,” said Ms. Lorge.
