On May 21, the Lakeville Civic Association was pleased to welcome the Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Christine Liu for an evening meeting hosted by Civic Association President Dr. Gordon Charlop.
Liu holds the distinction of being the first Asian-American to be elected to this office. That milestone hardly reflects the totality of her accomplishments.
Born into a Tawainese family that emigrated from Mainland China in the 50s to Taiwan, Liu and her family moved to Woodside Queens at the tender age of one. Her family developed a business there. They made a point of impressing upon Liu the importance of hard work. Her family moved to Forest Hills shortly thereafter. It was here that Liu began her stellar academic career.
Liu attended NYU as an undergraduate before attending Regent Law School where she earned her J.D. Liu credits her parents, particularly her mother, for directing her toward this career path.
Liu settled in New Hyde Park in 2012 where she and her husband John are raising two children. Apart from that, she has professionally risen from working for the Department of Homeland Security to a career helping the local community, first as a PTA volunteer to working for a local assemblywoman and now being elected to the Town Council.
Her breadth of knowledge is impressive and her desire to understand resident’s concerns was exemplified by the fact that she was the last person to leave the meeting, making sure that she listened to each and every attendee.
The Lakeville Civic Association thanks Liu for attending our May meeting.
