July happenings at the Floral Park Library

There’s a  lot going on at the Library this month. Our first concert on the Library lawn features the music of Billy Joel performed by Pat Farrell and the Cold Spring Harbor Tribute Band as the summer celebration of our 100th birthday rolls on.

Two attendees at the concert will surely be our new lion statues who stand guard at the Library’s main entrance. “Hugo,” named for “mind and intellect, ”and “Ethan” for “strength and wisdom” welcome all visitors and patrons!

And, we’re incredibly proud of our very talented Children’s Librarian Kelly Fernández, whose original artwork is featured as the logo and design for the 2023 Nassau Library Tour!!

Now that school’s out, Teens have a lot of events to choose from, many of which involve food of some kind (teens love their snacks!): Teen Cuisine; Trail Mix and Trivia Competition; Cookie Wars; Yarn Art with the Pom Queen; crafting with P[art]y Art; and A Teen Escape Room: The Upside Down – a/k/a Stranger Things.

The Library is co-hosting a  special three-part “Arts and Confidence” program in partnership with The Hance Family Foundation’s Self-Esteem Rising initiative. This series, for girls entering grades 3 thru 5,  combines the Beautiful Me program with a fun craft at each session.

Children’s creative-themed programs include: Group Painting; To Tie-Dye for and Button Art with the Pom Queen; and Make a Stuffed Animal. For early learners, there’s a three-week Chess Club (grades 2 -5) and a four-session Learn to Play the Piano (grades K – 2).

There’s also scavenger hunt program with a history lesson from History Mystery with Jason Edwards of Rogue Bear Press. Baby Start and A Time for Kids are on the calendar, as is a special “Bastille Day” family cooking event with Chefs of d’Future.

Weekly Chair Yoga for Adults continues in July, and we begin the first of a five-week Pilates on the Lawn series beginning later in the month. The lawn is also the setting for an evening Drum Circle with Long Island Feng Shui’s Laura Cerrano. Monday’s Movie Matinee is “80 for Brady.”

The Evening Edition Book Club hold  its regularly scheduled meetings; there are no FPPL Friends of the Library Book Club meeting in July and August. The Made with Love Knitting and Crocheting group meets Mondays at 6:30 pm and Wednesdays at 11:00 am.

The Library is closed every Sunday in July, and on Tuesday, July 4th in observance of Fourth of July. The Library Board meets Tuesday, July 12th at 7:30pm.

One-to-one tech help for tablets, smartphones, laptops and Kindles is available for our patrons by appointment only.
